Chemical Peel
A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layers. The skin that grows back after a chemical peel is smoother and younger-looking. Chemical peels are used to treat wrinkles, skin discoloration, and scars, typically on the face.
There are three basic types of chemical peels: superficial, medium, and deep. Superficial peels use mild acids like alpha-hydroxy acid to penetrate only the outermost layer of skin. Medium peels use trichloroacetic or glycolic acid to reach the middle and outer layer of skills. Deep peels use phenol to deeply penetrate the middle layer of skin. The type of peel used depends on the condition of the skin and the desired results.
