Stretch Marks - Skin Conditions
Profile
Stretch marks, or striae, are a type of scarring on the skin characterized by long, narrow streaks, stripes, or lines. These marks occur when the skin is suddenly stretched, most commonly due to pregnancy, rapid weight gain, weight loss, or growth spurts during puberty.
Stretch marks occur when the dermis, the middle layer of your skin, is stretched to a point where its elasticity begins to break down. As a result, microscopic bleeding along with tissue inflammation can give the stretch mark its characteristic pink or purple hue. Over time, the color may fade and the narrow bands may sink beneath your skin, sometimes appearing white or glossy.
Stretch marks are not harmful and do not cause medical problems. However, they can lead to issues with self-image and anxiety. Various treatments are available to improve the appearance of stretch marks, including topical creams, laser therapy, and microdermabrasion. It’s worth noting that no treatment can make stretch marks disappear completely. The effectiveness of treatments varies widely, and some people respond better to certain treatments than others.
