Acne Scars - Skin Conditions
Profile
Acne scars are the result of inflammatory or cystic acne. Inflammatory acne occurs when oil (sebum), bacteria, and dead skin cells clog a pore, causing a pimple or ‘zit’. When the pore becomes inflamed, it can lead to the surrounding skin tissue becoming damaged, leading to a scar.
When a severe acne breakout heals, the body may produce too much or too little collagen during the recovery process, which can lead to a scar. Excessive collagen can lead to raised scars (also known as hypertrophic or keloid scars), while a lack of collagen can result in depressed or pitted scars.
Acne scars can vary in appearance and are usually most noticeable on the face, but can also occur on other parts of the body. Treatments for acne scars may include laser treatments, dermabrasion, chemical peels, microneedling, and some types of skin surgery. It’s also worth noting that not everyone who has acne will develop scars, and that the severity and type of scarring can be influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, the severity of the acne, and how it was treated.
