Acne - Skin Conditions
Profile
Acne is a skin condition resulting from the accumulation of excess oil and dead skin cells in the hair follicles, leading to the formation of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and sometimes deeper lumps (cysts or nodules). Primarily appearing on the face, shoulders, back, neck, chest, and upper arms, it can affect individuals of all ages, but is particularly prevalent during adolescence due to hormonal changes.
Key factors contributing to acne include excessive sebum production, clogged hair follicles, bacteria, and hormonal imbalances. Apart from these, certain medications and dietary factors, such as high glycemic load foods, and stress can aggravate the condition. Recognizing these triggers forms the first step towards effective acne management.
Over-the-counter treatments with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid help manage mild cases. For persistent acne, prescription medications like topical retinoids or antibiotics may be required. Advanced treatments like chemical peels, laser therapy, light therapy, or microdermabrasion can be highly effective in severe cases, enhancing skin health and appearance.
