Description
Tanning services involve methods to darken the skin artificially. There are two main types of tanning services – UV (ultraviolet) tanning and spray tanning, and they’re typically offered in tanning salons, spas, beauty salons, and sometimes in fitness clubs.
- UV Tanning: This is the traditional method, done either through tanning beds or stand-up tanning machines that emit UV rays similar to the sun. The UV rays stimulate melanin production in the skin, resulting in a tanned look. This method has come under scrutiny because of the potential risks associated with UV exposure, including premature aging and skin cancer.
- Spray Tanning: Also known as sunless tanning, this method uses a spray-on solution containing DHA (dihydroxyacetone). DHA interacts with the top layer of the skin, causing it to darken for a temporary period (usually a few days to a week). Spray tanning can be done in a booth or manually by a technician using a handheld device. This method is considered safer than UV tanning as it does not involve UV radiation, but the color may not always look as natural, and the tan doesn’t last as long.
