Fractional Laser - Anti-Aging and Rejuvenation
Description
Fractional laser treatment is a type of laser resurfacing that aims to reduce facial wrinkles and skin irregularities, such as blemishes or acne scars. The term “fractional” comes from the idea that only a fraction or percentage of the skin surface is exposed to the laser.
The technology behind fractional lasers is based on creating tiny microthermal zones (think tiny dots) deep into the skin, which the skin repairs by pushing out the old, damaged skin and replacing it with new, fresh skin. The areas of untreated skin between the treated zones help to promote faster healing and less downtime.
Fractional lasers can be either ablative or non-ablative:
- Ablative Fractional Lasers (such as CO2 lasers or erbium lasers): These remove thin layers of skin and can have a greater impact on skin texture. They are often used for deeper wrinkles, more severe textural changes from sun damage, wrinkles, blotchiness, acne scars, and surgical or traumatic scars. It can only be performed once, but achieves significant results.
- Non-ablative Fractional Lasers (such as Fraxel): These lasers promote collagen growth and skin tightening without damaging the skin’s surface. Non-ablative lasers are often used for treating fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, melasma, and sun-damaged skin. These treatments are less invasive and require less recovery time, but you may need multiple sessions to achieve your desired results.
The procedure can be used on almost any part of the body, but is commonly used on the face, neck, chest, and hands.
Like all cosmetic procedures, fractional laser treatment has potential risks and side effects, including redness, swelling, and a risk of infection or scarring. Always consult with a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon to see if fractional laser treatment is the right option for your specific skin concerns and needs.
