Permanent makeup, also known as micropigmentation or cosmetic tattooing, is a procedure where pigment is implanted into the upper layers of the skin to create the effect of makeup. The process is similar to getting a tattoo, and it is done using a variety of tattoo methods, including a traditional tattoo or coil machines, rotary or pen machines, and by hand or non-machine methods.

The idea is to enhance natural features and reduce the time spent applying makeup. Common areas for permanent makeup application include:

1. Eyebrows (microblading or powder brows): Pigment is implanted in hair-like strokes or a powder fill technique to create the appearance of fuller, more defined brows. This can be particularly useful for those with sparse or thinning eyebrows or those who have lost their eyebrows due to conditions like alopecia or chemotherapy.
2. Eyeliner (eyelash enhancement or eyeliner tattoo): This can create a defined line along the lash line or enhance the lash line with a soft, smoky appearance.
3. Lips (lip blushing or lip tattoo): Permanent makeup can outline the lips, add definition, or provide a subtle blush of color to create the illusion of fuller lips.
4. Scalp Micropigmentation: This can create the appearance of fuller hair or disguise scars or thinning hair on the scalp.
5. Areola Repigmentation: This technique is often used in reconstructive plastic surgery to recreate a natural-looking areola and nipple after breast surgery.

The effects of permanent makeup typically last from one to five years, depending on factors like the individual’s skin type, the type of pigments used, and exposure to environmental elements. Over time, the color fades, and touch-ups (sometimes referred to as “color boosts”) may be necessary.

As with any procedure that breaks the skin, there are risks, including infection, allergic reactions, granulomas, keloid formation, and MRI complications.
